How to Decide Where to Backpack

You've made the big decision: you are going to leave England's green and pleasant lands (or wherever your usual abode may be), don a backpack and see the world for the next few months. Suddenly you're faced with more questions: which countries should you focus on, where should you go first and what places should you avoid? You scour the internet but as a first time backpacker you have difficulties imagining what any of the destinations will be like in reality, exciting though they seem. Here are some pointers for planning a trip which is right for you.

First things first let's talk about the money. If you decide how much you want to spend in advance then you won't feel guilty every time you book a flight. The country comparison cost calculator at roam-the-world.com shows you the costs for sleeping, eating and travelling in each country so you can compare how far your money will get you. For example, travelling in South America costs (on average) four times as much as travelling in South East Asia. So if you know how much money you have to burn and how long you want to backpack for this will narrow down some of the options.

Would you prefer to see one or two countries in depth or travel through a number of countries, and continents, picking out selected highlights? The choice is yours. You could choose a 6 month trip touring South East Asia and then head across the globe to the South American sights or you could spend the same time getting to know the people, culture and landscape of Southern Africa.
Whatever type of trip you choose, and whichever countries you tread through we wish you a fantastic trip
