Reindeer Fur, Kapok Fiber and Wool Sleeping Bags - The History of Warm Sleeping Bags

War, death and exploration are a few of the things associated with the worlds first sleeping bags.  There has long been a need for sleeping under the stars by adventuresome people.  Sleeping bags were invented and developed by such people, for such people.  Whether reindeer fur, Kapok fiber or wool sleeping bags, they have all been changed and refined over time.

It's been written that in 1000 AD Freydis Eiriksdottir was the first person to have invented a sleeping bag, perhaps using a sail from a ship.  She was the brutal daughter of Fredrick the Red of Greenland, a fierce Viking.  However, in reading The Saga of Erik the Red, from the Icelandic Saga Database and in reading Book II Icelandic Records, Chapter: Voyage of Freydis, Helgi and Finnbogi in the book titled The Norse Discovery of America, I found nothing to support Freydis having invented or used a sail, reindeer fur, kapok fiber or wool sleeping bag.

It's unmistakable though, that the earliest insulators for sleeping bags were woven camel fur, reindeer fur, kapok fiber and later duck and goose down.  Kapok fiber comes from the Kapok tree.  It's light, buoyant and the kapok fiber is resistant to water.  The kapok fiber is often used in place of down.  In the year 1823, a rubber patent was issued to Charles Macintosh.  This patent made new types of sleeping bags possible.  Francis Fox Tuckett tested a prototype of his alpine sleeping bag, which was made of blanket material and had a rubber undercoating, in 1861 .

Then, in 1876 Pryce Jones made Euklisia Rugs, which were wool sleeping bags.  They were made from Brown Army Blankets originally made for the Russian Army.  According to a copy of the Brown Patent in the Powys county archives, the wool sleeping bags were to be 2 yards and 11 inches long by 1 yard and 31 inches wide.  These wool sleeping bags, which were the first to be mass produced and circulated, used fasteners to keep them closed.
While the Pryce Jones rug, wool sleeping bags were mass produced, they weren't commercially produced.  The first commercially produced bag was filled with reindeer fur and kapok fiber.  It was developed in 1889 by Fridtjof Nansen and the company Ajungilak of Norway, for the first expedition to the North Pole.  Today Ajungilak is part of Mammut AG, where reindeer fur and kapok fiber isn't currently used.

Next, in 1912 Captain Lawrence Oates had a sleeping bag made with tapered feet and reindeer fur.  On his way back from the the Antarctic with his companions, he got severe frostbite and was slowing everyone down.  On March 17, 1912, leaving his reindeer fur bag behind, he sacrificed himself to give his friends a chance at survival.  His reindeer fur sleeping bag is on display today at the Scott Polar Research Institute.

Finally, in 1942 United States soldiers were issued sleeping bags.  These first sleeping bags were heavy and bulky to carry, but important to the troops' wellbeing.  In the late 1940's the army started using down sleeping bags to make them easier to pack.  Today the US military uses down, synthetic and wool sleeping bags (not usually reindeer fur or Kapok fiber though), depending on where they are deployed.

In today's society sleeping bags are associated more with survival and warmth.  The explorers of today reap the benefit of innovations and refinement all the years have brought.  Reindeer fur, kapok fiber and wool sleeping bags aren't heard of very often.  Nowadays mainly down or synthetic sleeping bags are used, but if we needed to we know we could still make ourselves a reindeer fur bag to keep warm.

Looking Camping Tent for 1-2 Person?

You go on foot or by bicycle or motorcycle on the road and you get up every night in a different place, then a light tent you quickly design desirable. Hikers are best served by tents of 2-3 kg. These are usually made of polyamide (nylon) or polyester reinforced with rip stop (diamond reinforced wire). Both synthetic materials are lightweight, strong, durable, and washable and dry quickly. You can easily store a few days without the wet cloth there suffer. Drawbacks of these materials are the condensation, sensitivity to UV radiation (coatings that may occur), and the stretching of the fabric when it is wet (in particular, nylon).

For cyclists and canoeists are tents of 3-6 kg the most appropriate. Camping tents are made of polyamide, polyester, cotton or light weight of the mixed polyester cotton. Cotton breathes better, is more resistant to UV radiation but dries slowly and is not washable. Polyester Cotton is its characteristics between polyester and cotton.
Stick arc Tents are by their shape often broader. Moreover, there are no poles in the tent or the entrance. A place for luggage and an awning over the entrance can be useful against the ingress of rain. When tents of synthetic material for adequate ventilation to prevent condensation. If the tent is in two sheaths, you can distribute the weight.

Setting up the tent
The lightweight cam (bivouac) tent and the bow stick (umbrella) tent are both easy to set up. A no tent usually has something more shaving lines and pegs, but a bow stick tent takes some more time to implement the sticks through the slots or the inner tent to hang it. There are also so-called pop-up tents who himself up, a few pegs in the ground and ready. Folding is just a trick. Some tents can hang the inner tent in bad weather or degrade without being wet. When cheap note that there are adequate ventilation in the tent.
You go by car on holiday and swap your regular pitch? Then it is important that the setting does not take too long and the tent provides ample sleeping, living, and luggage. Possibly the need tents have headroom. The tent should be able to all weather conditions (rain and extreme wind or sunlight). There is plenty of choice in medium called pyramid tents.

The Rich Tradition and History of Ascot Hats and Beanie Hats

Ascot hats and Beanie hats cap are two special headpiece accessories that are both unusual yet stylish. These hats have a long heritage and colorful histories. If you want highly contrasting hats to show different sides of your personality, then you should have a Beanie and an Ascot in your collection.

Get to Know Ascot Hats for Men and Women

When one speaks of Ascot headwear, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a fabulously adorned picture hat for women. That is because it is the most favored headwear of ladies who attend the glamorous Royal Ascot races.

As you can see, the Ascot race is an event graced by the British queens, princesses and the nobility. And they always wear stylish picture hats in different colors, shapes, sizes, and adornments. Thus the fashion of the Ascot has been born. Today, wearing Ascot hats for women is a must if you are going to witness a prestigious race.

However, there is also an Ascot fashion for men. For the gentlemen who love the Royal races, they can wear the Ascot cap. This is also known as the Cuffley, a kind of hat that has a striking resemblance with the flat cap. The Cuffley however has a much smaller visor and usually made exclusively from felt or faux leather.

A Closer Look at Beanie Hats

Unlike the Ascot headwear, the Beanie does not have a royal origin. It is also not traditionally worn as a fashion accessory. In fact, Beanies are more functional. They are specifically designed to protect the head of the wearer against heat or cold.
The origin of the Beanie is rather obscure. Some say that the design was first introduced during the medieval times. The medieval hat that resembled the modern versions was worn by university boys. It was known then as the yellow bill or yellow hats. Eventually, it became the beanus which was the slang term for bean or the head.

Today, Beanie hats are still known as the preferred headgear of college boys and girls. It has become a universal hat suitable for all genders. This kind of headwear does not have a brim or visor. It can completely cover the head up to the ears much like the functional bonnet.

As a fashion accessory, the beanie is very popular among bohemians, poets, artists, and the intellectual elite. It is also the signature headpiece of Rasta musicians and those who are following the Rasta way of life.

But the superior functionality and versatility of the Beanie made it a suitable everyday headgear. You can wear it for all seasons and for all casual occasions. Modern Beanies are knitted caps that allow the head to breathe while giving adequate protection. Some versions include an ear flap and they are preferably worn during the colder months of winter.

Ascot hats and Beanie hats can define different aspects of your personality. For more formal occasions, the Ascot headwear would be ideal. But if you want to get the free thinker look, then you should wear the function Beanie cap.

Sleeping Bag Maintenance and Care Tips for Beginners

If you've just purchased your first sleeping bag, then congratulations! That's the most essential camping gear for all your adventure days. Sleeping bags undoubtedly come with numerous advantages, they keep you warm at night, keep you comfortable and safe for a good night's sleep when camping outdoors.

Whether you just invested in a synthetic or down insulation, here are some tips on how you can maintain and care for your bags to ensure they stay warm, comfortable, and fluffy through many years of camping adventures to come your way!

Proper Storage
The very first vital tip you have to remember when it comes to the care and maintenance of your sleeping bag is to avoid leaving it packed tight in its sack for a long time. Though this may seem convenient, as you can just stuff it in its football sized sack and fling it into your closet. However, this process can turn out to be the ideal way to ruin the thickness (which is the source of all the warmth you get) of your bag.

Usually, sleeping bags come with bigger storage sacks in addition to the small travel-sized one. It is advisable that you always store your sleeping bag in the larger one so it can expand and stay in its normal shape. In case your bag didn't come with a larger storage bag, then it's worth every penny to invest in one. Once you pack it well, ensure that you keep it in a dry and cool place.

Keep it Dry after Use or Wash
Even though you store your bag properly, you have to make sure that before you pack it, it is completely dry. If your sleeping bag gets wet during your camping trip, or you spent some time to wash it, then make sure you give it as much as 24 hours to dry off completely in a cool place. Afterwards, you can store it back in the sack. This is an important tip. If you ignore it, it will lead to greater chances that mold and mildew will build up on the bag.
Air it out

The most important maintenance tip is to completely air out the sleeping bag once you use it. After your camping trip, take the bag out and hang it for several hours (depending on how the weather remains). Some sunlight and fresh air will prevent the bad odors from bacteria and mold, which can find their way into the sleeping bag especially if your camping or hiking trip was a sweaty one. Through this tip, you can ensure that your sleeping bag will remain brand new.

The Wash
If you purchased a down sleeping bag, then you should know it is much lighter than the synthetic one and you will have to put in more efforts in the wash. This is because the down bag is more fragile than the synthetic one and the safest option is wash it in the bathtub by hand.

However, if you have a synthetic one, then rest assured that machine wash works like a breeze. There are special formulas or solutions you could purchase for washing them.

Once you have a sleeping bag in your collection of outdoor gears then be sure to follow these care and maintenance tips to ensure years of cozy nights out in the wild!

Differences Between Dome, Pick-up Truck And Cabin Tents

Do you like camping outdoors? Do you love going for road trips and camping? You might have come across different types of tents and you might have wondered their differences. In a move to help you understand and distinguish the different types of tents and how they are used, the tents following are differences about some of them.

Dome Tents
These are the most common type of tents and used by many camping lovers. Usually, dome tents are rectangular in shape just like a dome and use two or three poles that create an arch over the top part of the tent. Most dome tents come with a rain fly tarp which is usually fixed to the arch of the tent's ceiling in order to shelter you from being soaked in case of rainfall at night.

Dome tents are versatile, resilient, affordable and actually very easy to setup. They are ideal for one person because of their small size. However, they are available in different sizes depending on the number of people who will use it.

Cabin Tents

These are big tents that are usually shared by several people or large families. They are specially designed to accommodate a large number of people in fact it can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people. When it comes to price, cabin tents are expensive than dome tents. However, they are cost efficient when it comes to accommodating a group of people. Cabin tents also have a privacy wall that allows campers to seclude themselves when changing clothes. Another feature is that they have privacy rooms that can be zipped as you sleep at night. They are strong, durable and comfortable.

On the downside, cabin tents are very heavy to carry and you must use a car or van to carry them from one place to another. This means that they are not ideal for one or two people. Additionally, they are a little complicated when it comes to setting them up. You will need help from an experienced person to set one up.

Truck-bed Tents

These are essentially dome shaped tents that are designed to fit at the back of a pickup truck. They are expensive compared to the other two types and are ideal for those who own pick-up trucks. For you to set them up, you will need a pick up and a bit of experience otherwise it will take you time to set one up. Without a pick-up track this tent might be irrelevant to you.

Tactical Backpacks: Must-haves for the Active Police Force

Police officers are required to carry plenty of equipment especially during field operations as part of their job, said equipment of which are best carried in backpacks. But not just any backpack, however, because conventional backpacks are unsatisfactory for the demands of the job – only tactical backpacks will do for police officers on the job!

What are tactical packs in the first place? These are part of the standard load-bearing equipment of military soldiers and police officers used to carry extra weapons and ammunition, food rations, medical supplies, tents and sleeping gear, and extra clothes, among other important items necessary for survival in the field.

To say that tactical backpacks are must-haves for police officers is an understatement indeed. Here are a few reasons why police officers should have their individual tactical packs while on the job of serving and protecting their fellowmen in their official capacity.

Backpacks used by police officers are designed to withstand years of extreme use in rough conditions. These backpacks are made from high-quality rugged polyester materials that will not easily tear even with a 100-pound load placed inside their compartments. Keep in mind that police officers have to carry plenty of equipment on their backpacks so the more durable these are in terms of materials and construction, the better for their missions.

In contrast, non-tactical backpacks are usually made from light-grade polyesters. This is the reason why these bags can easily tear even with just a few pounds of load within a few months.

Tactical backpacks are also designed with as many pockets and compartments as possible because of the wide variety of items that must be placed inside. As previously mentioned, these backpacks are designed to carry everything that a police officer – or a civilian using it for camping or travelling, for that matter – will require on the job especially during tactical missions. Thus, the more space provided by the backpack, the better for the purpose intended.

Where conventional backpacks only have a single large compartment and a few pockets in the front and sides, tactical packs are chockfull of compartments and pockets necessary for packing everything except for the kitchen sink, so to speak.

With all these features of tactical backpacks, it's no wonder that even non-police officers are buying these bags for their own uses!

Differentiating Hard Hats and Bump Caps

A lot of people who are working at a construction site are wondering if they should be using a hard hat or a bump cap. However, before deciding which to use, it is important to know the difference between the two.

The most important difference between a hard hat and a bump cap is that hard hats are ANSI compliant and required by the OHSA. On the other hand, a bump cap is not regulated compared to a hard hat.

Hard hats and bump caps are both used in a construction site as a head protective gear. People who are working in hazardous areas such as a construction site are required to wear protective equipment as a safety measure.

Bump caps have seamless one-piece design that is made of LDPE or low density polyethylene or plastic. This type of head protection is especially designed with a lightweight shell and with no suspension system. The main purpose of wearing a bump cap is to protect the head from bumps or minor injuries. It is intended to be worn in an area that has low head clearance or low hanging machineries. Bump caps are ideal to be worn at areas or work environments that include automotive repair, meter reading, food processing, pest control, maintenance departments, and also truck drivers.
On the other hand, hard hats are considered as the top choice for head protection. This type hard hat is a hard shell that is made with HDPE or high density polyethylene, nylon, plastic, and or lightweight thermoplastic resins. Within the hard hat is also a suspension system that is made with nylon, plastic, and combinations of the two other materials.

Hard hats are required by the OHSA and ideal to be used in workplace environments wherein head injuries and other accidents can happen unexpectedly anytime. Head injuries, falling debris, and falling objects would commonly occur at workplace areas such as construction sites, logging, and climbing utility poles.

When it comes to wearing the right type of head protective gear, it is important to determine your risk level for head injuries. If you are working in an area where there is only slight risk level, then you can wear bump caps. However, if you are working at an area where the risk for accidents is high, it is important to wear hard hats to keep you safe.

Always prioritize your safety more than anything else. Wearing hard hats cap and bump caps are only some of the ways to keep you safe and protected against possible head injuries. There are a lot of other personal protective gears that should always be worn whenever you are on your workplace.

It is the responsibility of the construction site operator to ensure that the workers are safe at the workplace. If the nature of the workplace deals with many hazards, the construction site operator has to adhere to the policies implemented. This is important because not adhering to the policies can only subject the owner to numerous fines and charges.

Types of Outdoor Umbrellas

Outdoor umbrellas come in several styles. Depending on your activities or location, you may wish to consider one or more of the following types:

1. Market/Patio

Market or patio umbrellas work well for shading chairs or patio tables. Often, their canopies are made of polyester or acrylic, synthetic materials that block sunlight and moisture. These materials also hold up well to sun and weathering. You may find canopies in a wide range of colors and designs.

A market umbrella has an extra layer or flap at the top of the canopy. This extra layer acts like a vent, allowing wind to pass through the umbrella. This way, the force of the wind is likely to cause less damage to the umbrella. Of course, in heavy winds, you should close or remove your umbrella to a storage area.

Poles may be composed of wood or aluminum. Wood parts often have an attractive finish, but typically do not offer tilt options. Not all aluminum poles will have a tilt option, either, but the ones that do will advertise either a manual tilt, such as push-button, or a simple mechanical tilt, such as collar tilt or auto tilt
2. Beach

Beach resorts offer their customers umbrellas on the sand. An individual or family conscious of the sun might also carry an umbrella on an excursion. The canopies often look similar to those of market and patio umbrellas. However, their poles usually don't have tilt options.
Sometimes the bottom of the pole will have an auger or sharp tip you can use to drive or screw the umbrella into the sand. If the pole doesn't have a tip like this, you can purchase a separate base you screw into the sand and set your umbrella pole into. Some of these bases even come with attached tables where you can set your drinks, reading material, or sunscreen.

3. Wall Mount

You can purchase an umbrella of durable material that mounts to your wall, too. Wall mounts have rotating and tilting arms so you can control the position and angle of the canopy. Check the specifications carefully before purchasing a wall mount model. It may require specific types of hanging materials or must be hung in specific portions of the wall.

4. Offset

The base and pole stand to one side of the canopy. This type offers an easy solution to shoppers who already own patio tables without a hole in the middle. You don't have to buy a new table or cut a messy hole in your old one. Make sure to measure so that you ensure the base sits far enough out of your way when you eat or sit to play games. Quality offset umbrellas should be wide enough that the base and pole don't obstruct your activity.

Outdoor umbrellas come in enough styles that you can pick one to fit your needs perfectly. Whether you read, eat, sleep, or relax outside, you can enhance your protection from the weather and your comfort.
